GILMAR JABAQUARA
Corinthians, Santos
1951-1967

For a country not know for its goalkeepers, Gilmar brought pride to this position for Brazil. Signed by Corinthians of Sao Paulo in 1951, he lead the team to the state championship that very same year, and then again 1952. In 1953 he made his Brazil national debut at the Copa America in Peru. His fame grew as a member of the illustrious 1958 World Cup team. He yielded only three goals in six games and helped shift the focus of football from Europe to South America. No matter the team who he played for, the team dominated the competition. In 1961 he joined his home-town club of Santos and won the World Club Cup in 1962 and 1963, plus an additional six league titles. In 1962, he won another World Cup vs. Czechoslovakoia. In his final and 100th cap, he notched a 2-1 victory over England in 1969. For a team long-known for its defense, Gilmar added a stable balance in the nets that helped build the Brazilian dynasty.
